Bread Knives – You Need A Good One
Have You Ever Tried To Slice A Loaf Of Bread With A Dull Knife?

You probably ended up with smashed bread rather than sliced bread! Or with a knife that was just too short to fit all the way through the loaf of bread? You have to come at it from both sides to get the job done.
If you bake your own bread, or if you buy unsliced bread from a bakery, you need to have a good quality bread knife. It can provide an even slice and will give a nice appearance for the remainder of the loaf.
Bread knives usually have a serrated blade. The serrated blade makes it easier to slice through the loaf, and provides for a cleaner, smoother cut than other types of knives. Furthermore, if the knife has pointed serrations rather than wavy serrations, this increases the life of the knife and gives the user better control.

You can see that with bread knives you will have different options for the length. A common length for a bread knife is from six to ten inches long. Consider using a six-inch knife for cutting smaller items, such as sandwich buns. A long serrated blade is essential when cutting bread, so go for the 10-inch bread knife for whole loaves.
Today’s knives are manufactured primarily of stainless steel or a high carbon stainless steel. High quality stainless steel, particularly Sheffield steel, is sturdy and long lasting when cared for properly. It remains a popular favorite and with good reason. Carbon steel is a softer metal than stainless and is easily sharpened; however it also blunts easily. Ceramic blades require a special diamond stone for sharpening. However, they remain sharp for longer than steel and are rust proof and stain proof.
Don’t buy a bread knife without first considering the quality. If you buy a knife that is of poor quality, it won’t do as nice a job, and it won’t last long. Then you’ll just be back where you started! Better to spend a little more money and buy a good knife that will serve you well.
There are a couple of things to consider before purchasing your bread knife. First, make sure it is full tanged, which means that the steel in the blade and the steel in the handle are all one piece.
Second, make sure that it is full forged, rather than stamped. Stamped knives are generally thinner and up to 20% lighter than their forged counterparts. They are less expensive, but require more effort on the part of the user to get the job done.
Full forged knives are manufactured more precisely, are better balanced, and stay sharp longer than other types.
For ease of cutting thin slices of breads or cakes, look for a heavier bladed knife.
You might also want to look to see if the warranty suits your expectations. Most quality knives offer a lifetime warranty.

Having an important knife set is a must if you enjoy cooking. Better quality knife sets usually demand a much higher price tag, but you can be sure that they will last long and suit the purpose much better than a flimsy knife set.

It’s not just bread, but anything you cut in the kicthen. As your previous commentor said, a full knife set can make cooking a lot easier.

I totally agree with you. My wife specifically bought a knife set which is durable and convenient to use. She said it should last forever and she’s right. The set of knives we have was almost 10 years in our kitchen and they still very sharp.

The cost of a good knife block set is a important to keep in mind. Some people will find that they can only afford to buy cheap sets and low end cooking appliances. However, these items are often of very poor quality and generally need to be replaced frequently. While it might stretch the family budget slightly, a good set of professional quality knife block or cookware will be a much better buy. Sometimes these items can be found wholesale at certain stores online and offline. This will help cover some of the extra expense as well.
