Recipe-Whole Wheat Sandwich Buns

My Family Just Does Not Like The Soft, Soggy Sandwich Buns You Buy At The Store.

Even the so-called whole grain buns are usually smashed and all stuck together when you take them out of the package. Tasteless too!

So to combat that problem, I developed a wonderful, hearty whole wheat sandwich bun that always gets rave reviews. You can use this recipe to make dinner rolls as well.

Whole Wheat Sandwich Buns / Rolls

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/8 cup (2 TBS) olive oil
  • 1/8 cup (2 TBS) honey
  • 1 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup regular oats
  • 1/2 cup instant vital wheat gluten flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp. yeast

Place all ingredients into your bread maker in the order listed, or per your bread maker’s instructions, adjust it to the “Dough” setting, and push “Start”.

In approximately 1 1/2 hours, the dough will be ready to take out of the bread machine and shape into buns or rolls. Remove the dough from the bread pan, break off pieces between the size of a golf ball and tennis ball, roll into round shapes, place on an oiled baking stone or cookie sheet, and cover with a light-weight towel. Let rise in a warm place for 20-30 minutes until buns are doubled in size.

Bake in pre-heated oven, 350 degrees, for about 20-25 minutes. The time may vary depending on your individual oven.

After the sandwich buns have cooled, I slice all of them, place them into a zip freezer bag, and store them in the freezer. Ready to use at any time! And delicious too!

It’s much more fun and so much easier to use a bread machine to make these sandwich buns than doing it by hand! And you’ll save a ton of time, as well. I use this recipe and it really does make some wonderful bread. I cannot remember the last time I bought a loaf of bread from the shops, the homemade stuff is much tastier.
