Toast in Terms of Caviar
In terms of caviar, toast seems to be the utensil of choice. Black caviar enthusiasts insist on not using any type of metal spoon because it can greatly tamper with the caviars flavor. If you’re a true caviar connoisseur and enjoy eating your roe by itself, try using either a mother of pearl, ceramic or glass spoon. For most however, crackers and toast are preferred because their subtle taste and contrasting texture accentuate the velvety and silky texture of the caviar’s shell. Toast will also soak up any residue oil that may be left over from the eggs.
A big misconception is that toast shouldn’t be flavored when topped with Caviar. On the contrary, any type of herb or cheese will only heighten the caviar’s flavors. If you own your own bread maker, toss in any of your favorite herbs from your pantry in your dough or add them afterwards, in the additional toasting process. The varieties of toast that pair well with caviar are endless, you can enjoy your caviar with melba toast, sour dough, rye or even wheat bread. Plain toasted baguettes are favored because they are neutral enough where your guests can stack their own condiments and not have an overwhelming amount of flavor that will only over power the caviars flavors.
The reason why gourmet food is perceived as hedonistic, is because every aspect of every pairing is intricately special in its own right. So the next time you’re hosting a party, or going out for a lavish picnic, don’t forget to bring along a few different choices of great toast to pair with your caviar.
